Malignant granular cell tumor of soft tissues: a study of two new cases.

2001

We describe 2 cases of malignant granular cell tumor. A marked discrepancy exists concerning the criteria of malignancy of this rare entity, which was diagnosed in male patients aged 41 and 52 years, respectively. They presented with tumors measuring more then 3.5 cm; one arose in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue in the region of the scapula, whereas the other was situated in deeper soft tissue in the pelvis. One case, with previous diagnosis of benign granular cell tumor, presented local recurrence 2 years after the initial diagnosis. The other case presented a fascicular pattern of growth invading adjacent muscular tissue. Both neoplasms were composed of polygonal and spindle cells, sho…

Granular cell tumor: report of 8 intraoral cases.

2006

The neural histogenetic origin of the oral granular cell tumor: An immunohistochemical evidence

2010

Aims: Granular cell tumor (GCT) is a rare neoplasm that can appear in any site of the body, but most are located intraorally. Its histogenetic origin remains unclear. This report analyzes the immunoprofile of 15 cases of granular cell tumors, occurring in 13 women and 2 men and the lesions were located on the tongue or upper lip. Patient age ranged from 7 to 52. Methods: The patients demographic data and the cytological and architectural features of the lesions were analyzed in oral GCTs (n = 15). The lesions were also submitted to a panel of immunohistochemical stains with antibodies against S-100, p75, NSE, CD-68, Ki-67, Synaptofisin, HHF-35, SMA, EMA, Chromogranin, Progesterone, Androgen…

Extra-tongue oral granular cell tumor : histological and immunohistochemical aspect

2017

Background Granular cell tumor (GCT) is an uncommon benign tumor founded in any part of the body but mainly in the tongue. Extra-tongue oral granular cell tumor (ETOGCT) is rare with few cases reported. Here we describe seven cases of oral GCT located in sites other then the tongue and discuss histopathological and immunohistochemical differences between differential diagnoses. Material and Methods We retrieved all cases diagnosed with oral granular cell tumor, from the Oral Pathology Service at the School of Dentistry/ University of São Paulo, and excluded the ones sited in the tongue. Immunohistochemical staining anti-S100 was also performed. Results The presented cases of Extra-tongue Or…

Desmoplastic primitive nonneural granular cell tumor of the skin.

2014

Abstract Primitive nonneural granular cell tumor of the skin was first described by LeBoit et al in 1991 as "primitive polypoid granular cell tumor." Few cases have been reported to date, all being polypoid or deep well-delimited lesions and formed by large spindle or polygonal granular cells with moderate nuclear atypia and increased mitotic activity. This granular cell population does not have a Schwannian, myogenic, melanocytic, fibroblastic, histiocytic, or epithelial differentiation. We report a case that fully satisfies the criteria for primitive nonneural granular cell tumor of the skin and, in addition, shows an extensive desmoplastic stroma. This desmoplastic variant of primitive n…

Cutaneous dermal non-neural granular cell tumor is a granular cell dermal root sheath fibroma

2017

Dermal non-neural granular cell tumor (NNGCT) was first described in 1991 as an S100-negative polypoid non-melanocytic tumor. Although originally introduced in the literature as a primary cutaneous tumor, it was later emphasized that such qualification could not be held until the line of differentiation was clarified. It was also demonstrated that not all cases were polypoid. In the current study we try to further characterize this entity by presenting 5 cases of NNGCT. As expected, not all of them were polypoid. The ages of the patients varied from 10 to 43 (mean age 22). They all were composed of S100-negative granular cells with variable atypia and mitotic figures. None of them recurred …

Granular cell tumor of the oral cavity; a case series including a case of metachronous occurrence in the tongue and the lung

2014

The granular cell tumor (GCT) is a rare, benign tumor that most commonly occurs in the oral cavity, particularly in the anterior part of the tongue. In this study the experience with 16 patients with a GCT observed in a single Institution will be discussed. Although no radicality has been obtained in most cases, recurrences are rare. In one patient, a recurrence was noted four years after excision of the primary. In the same patient a pulmonary lesion occurred five years after excision of the recurrence in the oral cavity, most likely representing an example of metachronous occurrence and not a distant metastasis. Since recurrences and metachronous lesions are rare, as are distant metastase…

Properties and roles of BKCa channels in cultured cerebellar granule neuron: Experimental and simulation studies

2006

We studied the properties and roles of large-conductance calcium-sensitive potassium channels (BK"C"a) in cultured rat cerebellar granule neurons. In intact cells these channels had chord conductances of 130-200pS. The conductance, threshold for channel activation and the mean open time and open probability depend on the age of cells. In computer simulations the elimination of BK"C"a channel decreases the maximum and minimum peak values of an action potential, causes reduced hyperpolarization and increases firing frequency. The observed alterations may be linked to the complexity of granule neuron excitability during maturation and provide new insight into modeling the developmental changes…

Simulations of the cultured granule neuron excitability

2003

Abstract We have developed a biophysical model of a cultured rat cerebellar granule neuron and simulated its excitability under different experimental conditions. The basic excitability properties of such a small neuron; the specific action potential waveforms, the overall firing patterns induced by current stimulations, and the linear frequency-current relation, are the main model constraints. Simulations show that for a one-compartmental granule neuron model, the constraints are met using six voltage- and time-dependent ion channel types and calcium dynamics linked to BK Ca ion channel function. This kind of model of a single neuron forms a solid basis for building the increasingly more c…
